British Actor and Producer Pablo Al-Kaalik understands the value of keeping his body fit and mind focused. In 2016, Japanese scientist “Yoshinori Ohsumi” won the “Nobel Prize” for his discoveries into the mechanisms of “Autophagy”.

Autophagy is a natural regeneration process that occurs at a cellular level in the body. The process means self-eating,” and refers to the processes by which your body cleans out various debris, including toxins, and recycles damaged cell, reducing the likelihood of contracting some diseases as well as prolonging lifespan through fasting. These findings have also led to a better understanding of diseases such as Parkinson’s and dementia.

“Fasting promotes Autophagy”

Auttophagy is also achievable through intermittent fasting just as easily as longer fasts. Autophagy begins when liver glycogen is depleted, around 12-16 hours into a fast, then drops after 48 hours.

During the fed state, when insulin is increased, the rate of autophagy is low. During the fasted state as insulin drops and Autophagy increases dramatically, perhaps 5-fold.

Exercise improves insulin sensitivity, so for any person who is in shape will see insulin levels drop and lipolysis commence faster than someone not in shape. Low-carbohydrate diets cause less of a rise in insulin, so probably someone on a low-carb diet who then fasts will also see a quicker drop of insulin into the range at which it promotes lipolysis and autophagy.

Q: How long have you been practicing Autophagy?

“I been fasting since May 2018 in order to promote Autophagy in my body and fast an average of 24 – 48 between meals. Abstaining from all foods, sugars and only consuming water, black coffee or Green Tea.

Q: Do you fast every day?

“I did initially fast everyday to accelerate my body adapting to the routine, but to maintain the benefits it must be intermittent. So now I fast 5 to 6 days a week or mix it with a short 18 hour fast.

Q: Do you find it more difficult when acting or producing?

“On an average day I would busy either filming or training and I don’t find fasting a problem. I actually feel more focused. The first week you start is probably the most challenging but it gets easier”
