WEIGHTLOSS PRODUCTS: THE DARK SIDE

Now more than ever I am seeing “slimming teas”, “slimming meals”, wraps, lotions and a whole lot more. Believe me, when you’re scrolling through Instagram, Twitter or Facebook looking at “ripped” fitness models who are promoting these products, remember they worked their asses off to look like that, and these new products are using them for their marketing – false marketing may I add.

I want to take a time to look at these weight loss products and food replacement options and why they are NOT good for you.

Now, for those that don’t know, my diet is made up of fresh veggies, fruit, eggs and lean meat – and lots of it. In a day I consume four big meals; breakfast which is usually an omelette with spinach, kale, shredded chicken and peppers with some chilli to kick start my metabolism for the day. Then there is lunch which will be chicken with quinoa or wild rice and freshly steamed vegetables. During the day I will drink a lot of water and mid morning I will have veggies with humous. Pre workout will be meat and carbs. I’ll add sweet potato into my meal which is quite a small meal, usually 30 grams of meat for protein more veggies and 2 sweet potatoes cut up. After my workout I will eat another meal which is small but packed with protein and natural vitamins. A usual meal will be homemade soup through blending vegetables, adding in quinoa and some meat (meat will depend on the workout I just had as there is a high level of protein in quinoa to help aid muscle recovery).

As you will see from the above, my diet consists of natural sugars, carbs, meat and a very “clean” diet. Nothing is processed, everything is home-made even down to a simple tomato and chilli sauce. So it causes some confusion when people who are wanting to loose weight opt for pre-made meals which claim to help you loose weight.

For those loosing weight, you may start to see the common message “take “x” supplement with “x” amount of exercise a day” Have you seen it yet, yep… EXERCISE. No one needs to take these calorie controlled sachet meals when they can make healthy food at home, for half the price.

One element that annoys me when people are loosing weight is this one excuse “I don’t have time”. I’m sorry you don’t have time to look after yourself – well that’s bollocks. You do have time, you’re just making excuses.

When you have a higher amount of body fat to loose you will notice more weight fall off. The lower your body fat percentage the more muscle mass you will have and therefore put weight on through building muscle. Many mistake this for weight gain and either slow down eating or skip meals thinking that will make them fat, when infact, skipping meals will only slow your metabolism down and hold on to fat and your body has a very good survival mode and will hold onto fat stores.

You may see athletes having cheat meals, but you forget their training is intense, very intense to a level you’re not at yet so they can afford to have these cheat meals.

Some of these meal replacement options contain so many bi products that it’s quite concerning.

For example a weight loss mushroom falovoured soup contains the following ingredients;

Skimmed Milk Powder (30%), Soya Protein, Maltodextrin, Whey Protein, Vegetable Fat, Inulin, Modified Potato starch, Soya Oil, Tri Potassium Citrate, Milk Protein, Hydrolysed Vegetable Protein, Flavourings, Stabiliser: Carboxyl methyl Cellulose; Dried mushrooms (1.4%), Yeast Extract, Dried Glucose, Calcium Chloride,  Di potassium phosphate, Magnesium Oxide, Vitamin & Mineral Mix (Ascorbic Acid, Ferric Pyrophosphate, Zinc Gluconate, Vitamin E, Nicotinamide, Copper Gluconate, Sodium Molybdate, Vitamin A Acetate, Sodium Fluoride, Manganese Sulphate, Calcium d-pantothenate, D-Biotin, Chromium Chloride, Folic Acid, Vitamin D3, Potassium Iodide, Vitamin B12, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride, Vitamin K1, Thiamine Hydrochloride, Riboflavin), Potassium chloride, Soya Lecithin, Spice, Colour: Caramelised Sugar, Anti oxidants: E304, E307.

And now a normal mushroom soup from Covent Garden Soups contains these ingredients;

Water, mushrooms (22%), onions, cream, wheat flour, white wine, dried wild mushrooms (0.6%), salt, parsley, garlic, thyme, black pepper.

I don’t know about you, but I know which one I would prefer to consume. The Covent Garden soup for one has 22% mushrooms compared to the weight loss soup having 1.4%. It only has 12 ingredients compared to 47 along with it needing colour which is … SUGAR… in a weight loss product! And you wonder why they tell you to include a minimum of 20 minutes exercise with their products.

They are packed full of stabilisers and unnecessary chemicals. Just ask yourself when you pick these meals up… since when did making a simple mushroom soup require you to have a degree in chemistry.

Take the better option, buy yourself a recipe book and MAKE THE FOOD YOURSELF

Many of these are laced with sugar, some even have their first ingredient as fructose. Now you may argue that there is fructose in fresh fruit. There is but it is naturally occurring and your body can use it for energy. Your body doesn’t know how to break down these chemicals, your body doesn’t need them, so why are you shovelling them down your throat.

Most of these weight loss, chemical containing, products are more expensive than fresh fruit, veg and meat. And what’s worse they will leave you feeling more hungry and you will crave food, this is when you will grab that quick fix bar of chocolate – but it’s okay right, you’re going to the gym to burn off those 220 calories for the chocolate bar… Yeah, didn’t think so.

A common complaint I hear about fruit and veg is that it goes off quickly. Here are a few tips to making it last longer so you’re not throwing money in the bin;

  1. Don’t store your veg in the fridge
  2. Store your spinach, carrots, greens in the freezer. I always keep my spinach and kale in the freezer otherwise they go off far too quickly
  3. Don’t follow use by dates on veg. You will know when a carrot has gone off and usually you will just gut the bruised area off.
  4. Don’t waste anything. If you have a spare carrot,  onion, couple of mushrooms and a pepper make a stir fry, for goodness sake don’t just throw it in the bin, or cook them up in the oven with some chicken.

When loosing fat, don’t opt for these quick fix weight loss product. Corporations are making millions from people wanting a quick way to loosing weight, when infact they are setting themselves up for failure.

ALWAYS opt for fresh food

Ask any athlete, we all eat fresh food and enjoy creating meals, nothing is a chore as we love doing it and it shows in our performance. We eat the right foods for us and never anything processed and nothing that is ever flavoured; most chance is it doesn’t even taste like the actual vegetable you should be eating.

So when you now see these fitness models, holding a diet tea or meal supplement and you start feeling shit and buy into clever marketing, remember the product they’re promoting didn’t make them look like that; days on end looking after their bodies did.
